Esri Lebanon provides youth opportunities to learn new skills and gain experiences

GIS Awareness for Schools

This program was launched in 2014, targeting K10 & K11 students and teachers, as part of their professional orientation and promotion of GIS as a science/technology becoming of high demand nowadays. (Science of Where). During the program, students would receive training and compete by producing different apps.

With Students

Session Title: GIS Awareness for Schools | Session Duration: 2 hours

Targeted Audience: Grade 10 and above students

After this session, students will learn:

Find, explore, and create GIS maps using a free, web-based viewer application.
Help students visualize local, regional, and global data and make connections to their own environment.
Present questions and have students explore GIS maps to find answers.
Choose appropriate GIS classroom activities based on your instructional goals and students' level of knowledge.
Guide students through a standard process for investigating a problem using GIS.
Prepare a GIS map presentation on a topic of interest.

Technical Requirements: projection, internet connection, microphones (if the hall is too big)

Notes: the session is dynamic, where each module will be followed by feedback activities, at the end all students will get a certification of attendance, and some promotional items.

With Teachers

Session Title: Teaching with GIS: Introduction to Using GIS in the Classroom | Session Duration: 3 hours

Targeted Audience: Elementary through high school teachers, curriculum coordinators, and educational technologists.

After this session, teachers will learn:

Find, explore, and create GIS maps using a free, web-based viewer application.
Help students visualize local, regional, and global data and make connections to their own environment.
Present questions and have students explore GIS maps to find answers.
Choose appropriate GIS classroom activities based on your instructional goals and students' level of knowledge.
Guide students through a standard process for investigating a problem using GIS.
Prepare a GIS map presentation on a topic of interest.

Some of the Students Work

After this session and after correcting the evaluation sheets, we will select the most ranked students (Maximum 15) and divide them in groups of 5, to prepare the app of their selection, where Esri Lebanon will be assisting by providing technical & platform support. Applications are evaluated and scored based on predefined criteria in front of a jury composed from the school direction and from Esri Lebanon.
